Claude Payne Memorial Library

I have decided to accumulate, as many General Aviation, Aircraft, Engine & Component, Parts Catalogue, Service Manuals, Overhaul Manuals, Maintenance Manuals and such like manuals, for the benefit, reference and use of anyone in the Aviation Industry.

We are after any manuals, even superseded, obsolete or otherwise out of date, which are useful for reference and/or training purposes. (I get invaluable cable information from such manuals). Also any current manuals for oddball aircraft, no longer serviced by you; someone else may have a desperate need for them on a short or long term basis.

I have named this library, in the memory of Claude Payne, a LAME, well known in GA and Air NZ. He started his General Aviation career with Rural Aviation Ltd, in New Plymouth’s Bell Block airport in early 1960, working on Cessna 180 & 185 Topdressing aircraft. 1963 with Rex Aviation (NZ) Ltd, still in New Plymouth, and moved up to Ardmore airport with Rex Aviation in 1967. Although not Licensed at this stage, he was the Service Manager for Rex Aviation at Ardmore. He left Rex Aviation in 1976 to expand his Aviation career with Air New Zealand Ltd at Mangere, where he finally gained his LAME Licence, and ended up a Lead Hand in the hangar. Claude retired from Air NZ in 1996, but maintained an active interest in Aviation right up till his death in November 1999. Some of Claude’s own manuals make up the Library.

I have some room at my new facility at 127 Palmers Rd, Manurewa, and am accumulating the manuals there. My own collection of 428 manuals (AeroFiche) is the basis of the Library, with 108 from Airwork (NZ) Ltd, Ardmore (paper), and the balance of 53 from Claude Payne (paper). The Library has a total holding of 613 manuals. Most of the holding is Cessna, with Piper from Airwork.

Anyone contributing to the Library may elect to retain ownership of the manuals, and forever have free access to them. Anyone else wishing to use any manual, will have to pay a nominal fee for their use on a loan basis, and must return them when finished. We really are looking to have workshops deposit with us, any manual not currently in use. We will look after them, catalogue them and control their use. Don’t throw anything away, put into a box and send up to us. We will send you a list of your manuals, when catalogued.
